Differential Repair in Denton, TX

Hearing a whine that rises with your speed, or a clunk when you turn? That's your differential — the gearset that lets your drive wheels spin at different speeds. Eagle has diagnosed and rebuilt rear, front, and AWD differentials for Denton drivers since 1995. ASE-certified, ATRA member, with free local towing up to 40 miles on major repairs.

Diagnose It By Ear

Name that drivetrain noise

A failing differential announces itself — and the sound tells us where to look. Match what you're hearing to what it usually means.

Not sure which one you're hearing? Bring it in — an honest diagnosis pins down the real cause before any parts come off. Written estimate first, no upsell.

Know Your Setup

Where's your differential?

Whether you have one differential or three depends on how your vehicle puts power to the road. Find your drivetrain to see what you've got — and what we service.

Front-Wheel Drive

Most cars & crossovers

Where it is One differential, built into the transaxle up front with the transmission.

Listen for A whine or clunk from the front — often mistaken for a worn CV axle.

  • Front differential / transaxle service
  • Gear-oil change
  • CV & axle inspection

Rear-Wheel Drive

Trucks, vans & performance cars

Where it is One differential in the rear axle housing — the 'pumpkin' between the back wheels.

Listen for A howl, whine, or rumble from the rear that changes with your speed.

  • Rear differential repair & rebuild
  • Ring & pinion setup
  • Limited-slip service

All-Wheel Drive

Many SUVs & crossovers

Where it is Two differentials — front and rear — plus a center differential or coupling that splits power between them.

Listen for Noise or binding that's hard to place, or tires wearing unevenly.

  • Front & rear differential service
  • Center diff / coupling
  • AWD driveline diagnostics

4WD / 4x4

Trucks & off-road SUVs

Where it is Front and rear differentials plus a transfer case that sends power to both axles.

Listen for Grinding in 4WD, a diff that won't lock, or clunks off-road.

  • Front & rear diff repair
  • Transfer case service
  • Locker & 4x4 diagnostics

Outside — farther, faster Inside — slower
The outside wheel traces the longer arc — the differential lets it spin faster than the inside wheel.

How It Works

Why your wheels turn at different speeds

Here's the job your differential does every time you turn. Round a corner and your outside wheels trace a longer path than the inside wheels — so they have to spin faster to keep up. The differential is the gearset that lets them, splitting engine power between the two while allowing each to turn at its own speed. When it wears out, that smooth hand-off becomes a whine, a clunk, or a bind.

  1. Outside wheels travel farther On a curve the outer wheels cover more ground than the inner ones in the same moment.
  2. So they must spin faster To roll that extra distance without dragging or hopping, the outside wheel has to turn quicker.
  3. The differential splits the difference Its gears feed power to both wheels while letting each rotate at its own speed — the reason you corner smoothly.
  4. Worn gears break the hand-off As the ring, pinion, and bearings wear, that clean split turns into the noise and vibration you feel.

Why a Specialist

Differential work is gear work — and gear work is exacting

Setting up a differential is precision work: ring-and-pinion backlash, bearing preload, and gear-tooth contact all have to be dialed in, or the noise comes right back. Eagle has rebuilt drivetrains since 1995 — ASE-certified, ATRA member, over 50 years of combined experience, with the tools to measure a setup instead of guessing at it.

  • We set up gears by the numbers. Backlash and tooth contact checked with a dial indicator and marking compound — not by feel.
  • We rebuild in-house. Your differential is torn down, inspected, and rebuilt under our own roof, then road-tested before it goes back in.
  • Honest diagnosis first. Often a leak or low fluid, caught early, saves the whole gearset. We tell you the real fix — in writing — before any work starts.
  • Rear, front, AWD & 4x4. Cars, trucks, and off-road rigs — open, limited-slip, and locking differentials all in a day's work.

Down to the Component

What's actually failing inside

Most differential trouble comes down to a few parts. Because we rebuild in-house and diagnose at the component level, we fix the part that's worn instead of selling you a whole assembly you don't need.

  1. 1
    Ring & pinion

The gear pair that turns power 90° to your wheels — worn teeth are the howl and whine you hear.

  2. 2
    Carrier & pinion bearings

When these wear, you get the rumble and growl that rises with speed.

  3. 3
    Spider & side gears

The gears that let your wheels turn at different speeds — worn ones clunk on take-off and in turns.

  4. 4
    Seals & gear oil

A leaking pinion or axle seal starves the gears; caught early, it's a cheap reseal instead of a rebuild.

Maintenance

How often to service your differential fluid

Gear oil breaks down and picks up metal over time. How often it needs changing depends on how you drive — towing and Texas heat shorten every interval.

How you drive Front diff / transaxle Rear differential The one that works hardest Transfer case (4WD/AWD)
Daily driver 30,000–60,000 mi30,000–50,000 mi30,000–60,000 mi
Tows or hauls ~ every 30,000 misooner — 15,000–30,000 mi~ every 30,000 mi
Off-road / 4x4 ~ every 30,000 mi~ every 15,000 micheck after deep water
Severe / fleet ~ every 30,000 mi~ every 15,000 mi~ every 30,000 mi

General guidance only — your owner's manual and how you actually drive come first. Not sure when yours was last done? We'll check the fluid and tell you straight.

Trucks & 4x4 Gears, lockers & regears

For Trucks & Off-Road

Bigger tires, a lift, or a locker? Let's talk gears

Put larger tires on a truck and the gearing is suddenly wrong — power and mileage both suffer. Re-gearing to the right ratio brings it back. We also service and rebuild limited-slip and locking differentials for towing rigs and off-road builds.

  • Gear-ratio re-gears. Match your ring-and-pinion ratio to bigger tires so the truck pulls and shifts right again.
  • Limited-slip & lockers. Rebuild worn clutch packs and service locking differentials for traction when it counts.
  • Towing & hauling setups. Heavier-duty gear and the right fluid for a truck that works for a living.

Good to Know

Differential repair questions, answered

How much does differential repair cost in Denton?

It depends on the vehicle and whether it needs a reseal, a bearing job, or a full gear rebuild — so we never quote blind. We diagnose the real cause and put a written estimate in your hands before any work begins.

Can you just change the fluid, or does it need a rebuild?

Often a fluid change and a reseal, caught early, is all it takes. If the gears or bearings are already worn, we'll show you why a rebuild is the honest fix — and never sell you one you don't need.

What does a whining or howling rear end mean?

A whine or howl that changes with your speed usually means worn ring-and-pinion gears or bad bearings. It rarely fixes itself and gets louder over time, so it's worth checking sooner than later.

Do you work on limited-slip and locking differentials?

Yes — open, limited-slip (posi), and locking differentials, on cars, trucks, and 4x4s. We service the clutch packs and lockers as well as the gears.

Do you re-gear trucks for bigger tires?

Ask us — we can talk through the right ring-and-pinion ratio for your tire size and how you use the truck, and what it takes to get there.

Is the free towing really free?

Yes — free local towing up to 40 miles with a major differential or drivetrain repair. Call and we'll help get your vehicle in.

Do you warranty differential work?

We stand behind every rebuild with a solid warranty and road-test the repair before it leaves the shop.
